Changes to the NCLEX and IELTS for Nurses

This is a repost of an article from Allvoices.com (user:stephaniegomez) about the changes of the NCLEX and IELTS - a must read for nurses.

Here's a summary:

Passing rate has changed from -0.16 logits to 0.00 logits. This change will take effect from April 1, 2013 until March 31, 2016.

The IELTS score required is still dependent on the institution and the state. Better check it with the institution first prior to taking the exam. You can read more about the IELTS requirements at http://rayearthnurse.blogspot.com/2013/11/ielts-requirements-in-philippines.html.

IELTS Requirements in the Philippines

Source: inquirer.net
The popularity of the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination is known to a lot of nationalities, most especially to Filipinos. The IELTS has been a very important part of the requirements Filipinos need to submit to the companies and academic institutions they are applying for. The need for an IELTS certificate to verify one’s expertise in the usage of the English language in its four core skills – reading, listening, speaking and writing - is a crucial requirement they have to complete. This is the very reason why Filipinos are preparing to take the IELTS examination by getting involved in classes and trainings in an IELTS review center.

In registering for the IELTS examination, there are certain requirements that one has to take note of. First off, candidates should know that there are two agencies that offer the IELTS examination – British Council and IDP. Both agencies deliver the same examination, but they have different fees charged to their applicants.

For the British Council, the candidate needs the following upon enrolment: a valid ID or a passport (valid IDs can be government IDs like SSS, GSIS, and TIN), a soft copy of your photographs, a copy of your previous IELTS test report for retakers, a valid VISA or MasterCard for online payments and a soft copy of the ID you will be using to register. For IDP, prepare your valid IDs, a photocopy of the ID you will be using, and two pieces of passport-sized photographs. About their IELTS fee, British Council charges Php 8986 and IDP costs Php 8900. The British Council charges a little higher because they give some review materials for their candidates. However, the exam content is still the same, so candidates need not worry if they have a different exam with candidates who registered for IDP.

The IELTS test is conveniently offered in different test locations here in the Philippines. IELTS is available in cities like Manila, Cebu, Davao, Baguio, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Naga, Cabanatuan, Tagaytay, Batangas, Pampanga and Lipa. Tests are usually delivered thrice a month in Manila, and once or twice in other cities. The best thing to know about these schedules is to check them online in IDP and British Council’s website for the availability of the test.

It is best for candidates to ask help from IELTS review centers to check the availability of exam dates. Moreover, IELTS review centers will double check all the candidates’ requirements for the exam registration. Visit the best IELTS review center near you and be ready for the IELTS examination.

It is not really unexpected why more people choose to work abroad than here in the Philippines. People have always found it better to work in other countries not only because of the better salary packages offered but also with the experience of visiting another country. When we say people working abroad, the first profession that comes into mind is the nursing practitioners. Indeed, nursing is a very popular undergraduate degree program. In the Philippines, it is one of the preferred choices of college or university students since its demand abroad has always been high and almost never ending. However, it is important for individuals to know that there are processes one must undergo before they can get a visa and even work overseas especially in the United States of America.

The Visa Screening for Nurses from CGFNS or the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is one process one must undergo. The Visa Credentials Assessment is made up of an education analysis, licensure validation, English language proficiency assessment and an examination of nursing knowledge.

1. Educational analysis

This is to validate that the individual has acquired education in nursing that is comparable with the US graduates in the same field – nursing. Students should have completed secondary education, graduated from a government-approved institution and has received theoretical instruction hours and clinical practice hours in nursing care for child and adults, maternity and infant care, and psychiatric or mental health nursing.

2. Licensure validation

This is conducted to evaluate the individual’s licenses, certificates, diplomas that have been issued to the applicant. This is to ensure that all licenses are still valid and have not been revoked.

3. An Exam of Nursing Knowledge
The individual applying for occupational visa must reach the target score on either CGFNS Exam or the NCLEX-RN to provide their vast knowledge in the nursing field.

4. Eligibility review
This is to verify the successful completion of the NCLEX-RN or state board test pool exam. In addition, candidates are asked to have one passport-size photograph signed on the front and certified English translation of documents which are not in English.

5. English language proficiency assessment
Nurses are required to take the IELTS Academic format and is expected to get an overall band score (OBS) of 6.5 with a score of 7 in the IELTS speaking section.

These are the requirements one must be able to present when having the visa screen application. Documents and English proficiency exam are needed and should be completed to process the application.

A Closer Inspection at the Reproductive Health Legislation in the Philippines

One of the pressing issues the government has been dealing for a long time is how to manage the population growth in our country. Ranked as the 12th most populated country in the whole world, the Philippine population has already reached 105.72 million. According to CIA or the Central Intelligence Agency, 61% of this population is men and women from the ages 15 to 64. Based on 2009 predicted population, Manila has the most number of individuals with about 12 million persons, followed by Davao, Cebu and Zamboanga. Looking at these stats, we can say that Philippines indeed has a issue with this population growth as more and more individuals are being considered under the poverty line level. Due to this, the government has made step to make actions to control the population; so, the legislators have pushed the Reproductive Health Bill in the Senate.

The House Bill 4244, authored by Rep. Edcel Lagman, was an act that would have a comprehensive guidelines on accountable parenthood, reproductive health and population and development. As it was pressed to the Senate, it took over as Senate Bill 2865 trying to provide a national rules regarding reproductive health and population and development. Until recently is has become the Republic Act No. 10354 or also known as the Reproductive Health Law which makes certain universal access to methods, birth control method, fertility control, sexual schooling and maternal care.

Selected contraceptives would be made into an essential medicine and family planning techniques and surgical operations like ligation and vasectomy would be made available in any government hospitals. This bill would reduce the number of children in the family into two. The bill aspires to safeguard the women’s reproductive health and men would be made liable for reproductive troubles. Furthermore, youngsters would be informed regarding family planning on the 5th grade until high school. Additionally, to-be-married couples would go through family planning seminars before the issuance of their marriage contracts. To sum it up, the bill goals to manage the population for the economic progress of the country.

Studying the bill closely, citizens of this country will realize that individuals below the poverty line would be significantly damaged with this introduction. As research advocate, most Filipino families who have more than three children come from this family who have almost no income. If the government utilizes this, there will be plenty of money to be budgeted for the information drive and for the services that the residents should take advantage.
